VTM Virtual Tape Machine
Digital recording is now the standard for professional music production, but many engineers and musicians still long for the days of analog recording.
And they do for good reason – Analog Tape Machines have a SOUND.
Big, fat, warm, deep, rich and exciting are just some of the terms used to describe what recording onto a piece of magnetic tape sounds like. To those that know, tape is simply more musical. So we modeled two of the most famous tape machines in audio and provide them both along with options like bias, tape speed, tape type, and more in Virtual Tape Machines.
VTM has been praised by pro engineers for its extreme authenticity, because every aspect of tape is carefully reproduced. This authenticity is due to years of intense study from Slate Digital CTO Fabrice Gabriel. Using VTM on your tracks and mixes will make your mixes warmer, smoother, punchier, and more analog!
VTM emulates both a 16-track 2-inch tape machine and a 1/2 inch stereo mastering deck. Not only that, you can also choose between the two most popular tape formulations. Different formulations have different properties and headroom, and ultimately will give you different sonic results.
VTM accurately emulates the behavior of both of the most common tape speeds of 15 and 30 ips. Engineers who use tape sometimes choose which speed to use based upon the material they’re recording, since the bass response can differ a great deal between the two speeds. You can further refine the bass response using the bass alignment slider in the Settings module.

RC-Tube: Modeled after a vintage RCA Broadcast Tube Console from the 50’s.
The VCC RC-Tube plugin is an authentic emulation of a classic 1950's all tube broadcast console. The RC Tube Channel is intended to be placed on the inserts of your mix channels, and the RC Tube Mixbuss is intended as the first insert on your master fader. Together, this plugin package will recreate the sound of a vintage tube mixer, giving your mix a rich, fat, warm, and deep sound that until now, was unattainable with a 100% digital mixer.
Authentic Modeling
Slate Digital CTO Fabrice Gabriel employed new state of the art analog modeling techniques to capture the sound of this classic tube mixer in the digital domain. Using the same techniques required to model the four analog consoles in the Virtual Console Collection plugin, Fabrice managed to emulate the exact sonic characteristics in a nonlinear and dynamic way, including such precise details as tube saturation response and crosstalk.

RC-Tube consists of two plugins, Virtual Channel and Virtual Mixbuss. Virtual Channel is applied on individual mixing channels. Virtual Mixbuss goes on the first insert of the master fader. "When using the Virtual Console Collection, your DAW instantly takes on the personality of a real analog mixing desk. The imaging and depth improves, instruments sit better in the frequency spectrum, and mixing becomes easier and more musical. Virtual Tube Collection
London: Designed to emulate the tube circuits of vintage British consoles.
London is inspired by some vintage tube circuits originating from Europe. The sound is big, warm and bold in the lows and low mids, and slightly smooth in the top end. The transient response has a slight thickness to it without being overly aggressive. London sounds amazing for fattening up tracks in preamp mode, or thickening things up with it’s preamp saturation, and can add fat analog body in Console mode on the whole mix.
New York: Designed to emulate the solid-state discrete circuits of vintage American consoles.
New York is inspired by some vintage tube circuits with a hint of inspiration from some New York solid state discrete circuits to give it some tightness and impact. New York is aggressive in the mids, and tighter in the lows due its unique dynamic harmonic saturation. It can add incredible focus and punch to tracks in preamp mode, especially in boost mode. It’s also an all around winner for many genres in console mode when used on the master fader. You really dial in the saturation with New York and then find the perfect blend with the mix knob.
Hollywood: Designed to be the most colorful of the three modules.
Hollywood is perhaps the most colorful of the three modules, and it’s got some beautiful air, depth, excitement, and some really big bottom! Use it on boost mode and make your tracks come alive. It’s fantastic when paired with some of the vintage VMS mics to add some extra top end flavor and warm lows. In console mode, it can simply transform a lifeless mix into something larger than life.
FG-73 Modeled after the infamous Neve 1073 preamp.
The FG-73 preamp module is modeled after one of the most famous discrete solid state preamps in the industry, made in Britain and used on countless recordings. It has a bold, present and warm sound that works great on any audio source – even full mixes.
FG-76 Modeled after a vintage Telefunken V76 preamp.
The FG-76 preamp module is modeled after a vintage German tube preamp that has been used on many classic recordings. It has a thick and colorful tone that can make tracks and mixes sound more ‘alive’. The bottom-end saturates in a very unique and musical way, making it a great module for bass guitar and kick drum tracks.

AirEQ Earth Modeled after the low band on the Eiosis AirEQ.
The Eiosis AirEQ is one of the most highly-regarded plugin equalizers in the audio industry, and the Air & Earth modules bring the heart of the musicality of that EQ into the Virtual Mix Rack.
In addition to the actual Air and Earth filters themselves, both modules feature resonant filters (HiCut for the Air and LoCut for the Earth), with slopes from 6dB to 36dB/oct.
Custom Series EQ / Lift uses custom algorithms.
The Custom EQ is like an EQ All-Star team. During development we studied over a dozen classic analog equalizers to identify the best attributes of each one, and then took all of those attributes and put them into a single equalizer plugin. As a result, every band of the Custom EQ was inspired by a different original device, and has its own unique boost and attenuation design. Each band even has its own analog-modeled output section, with rich musical harmonics to give it a lively analog vibe. Even though it’s a hybrid design by nature, the Custom Series EQ is one of the most natural-sounding equalizers you’ll hear.
Revival Tubes, tape, and transformers
The result of years of research into what makes things sound ‘better’, Revival is a new type of Sonic Enhancer. Borrowing aspects of tubes, tape, transformers and world-class analog filters, it can be used on individual tracks – for adding air to pop vocals or fatness to drums, for instance – but it is also amazing during the mastering stage to bring out details in full mixes.

The FG-116 is a precise replication of the classic American FET limiter, and no expense was spared capturing every nuance of this amazing device. From its trademark timing characteristics to the extremely musical sound of its transformer, the FG-116 gives engineers and producers the musical and fat tone that has made the hardware so famous. The FG-116 sounds great on everything from lead vocals and drums to bass guitars.

The FG-116 Blue Compressors take the guesswork and setup out of parallel compression techniques by offering a Mix control. By dialing in heavy amounts of compression but dialing the mix back to 25%, you can enhance the punch of your drum tracks without making them feel overly compressed. The Hi Pass filter allows the compressor to ignore low frequencies, retaining low frequency impact while still controlling the dynamics.

The Monster Modeled after the UREI 1176 “All Buttons Mode”
The Monster emulates the classic “all-buttons-in” extreme compression sound of the famous vintage FET limiter hardware. The “all-buttons-in” effect can be pretty extreme, so we added some cool new features that make this processor more versatile, more creative, and more useful.
FG-401 Modeled after the SSL 4000E channel strip compressor
The FG-401 started as a recreation of the classic British console channel compressor, but morphed into a whole lot more. First, we gave it variable attack and release with increased range, which added more tonal options. After that we added an input transformer stage – but not just any transformer, the famous transformer from the British Class A Console! This adds a beautiful warmth and sheen to the compressor, and lastly we added an entirely unique opto circuit path that provides an additional smooth and rich tone. The FG-401 is perhaps the most versatile mix compressor in the world, and it can sound good on any source you feed into it!
Audified U73b Modeled after a vintage Telefunken U73b compressor.
The Audified U73b compressor module recreates the sound of an old, lush, warm, German vari-mu tube broadcast limiter from the 1960’s. The quality and distinction of its sound coupled with the scarcity of the original device, makes the U73b compressor plugin a top choice among producers and engineers.
FG-Stress Modeled after the Empirical Labs Distressor
The FG-Stress is a digital replication of one of the industry’s most highly coveted analog compressors, the Empirical Labs Distressor. Every aspect of the Distressor has been modeled, which is no simple task due to the Distressor’s unique topology where every ratio is essentially a different compressor! Like the hardware in which it models, the FG-Stress can mimic the tone of some of the industry’s most famous compressors like punchy VCAs, fat tube compressors, and even vintage opto units.
FG-Bomber complex signal processor that combines all analog-modeled transient processing, dynamic frequency manipulation, specialized compression, tube saturation, harmonic generation, and vintage analog filtering.

The SSD5 instrument library has different categories including instruments from previous versions of Steven Slate Drums, so users can always have access to their favorite sounds, even from first versions of Steven Slate Drums:
SSD5 Deluxe 2: The newest instruments recorded for SSD5. These are the most detailed instruments with more velocities, alternating hits and articulations. A wide array of improvements have been implemented from previous versions of Steven Slate Drums. The samples are unprocessed with the exception of slight EQ and compression. All the overheads are unprocessed (except for a mellow high-pass). The room mics are only processed with light and subtle compression as well as a gentle mid cut, which allows them to sit much better in the mix.
SSD5 Deluxe 1: The sample pack recorded for SSD4. They were the first Steven Slate samples with almost no processing. The only processing is a small mid cut in some of the samples.
SSD5 Classic Vol.1 and Vol.2: The old Steven Slate samples. Unlike newer samples, these don’t contain overhead mics. They contain one mono direct mic and one stereo room mic. The samples are fairly heavily processed, but still with a lot of room to sculpt and shape your own sound out of them.
SSD5 Classic Signature: Older Steven Slate drum samples with similar characteristics as Vol.1 and Vol.2, but the drum tones are significant as they are modelled after famous drum sounds heard on various hit records.
SSD5 Electronic: A set of SSD5 samples that consist of electronic drum sounds.
In the Spring of 2012, Chris Lord-Alge revisited his recording engineer roots and recorded multiple world-class drumkits at OCEAN studios in Burbank. He then mixed all the drums in his classic style in his LA mix room using the same processing chains that you’ve heard on all of his records. He even printed a sample layer of his famous SONY reverb unit on the kicks and snares. The result is some of the fattest, punchiest, most mix ready virtual drums in the industry!
